“Americano” and Meat Dress

 Meat Dress

Women as meat: the oldest metaphor. As Carol J. Adams wrote in The Pornography of Meat, it is usually invisible, this practice of “viewing another as consumable – as something,” of presenting the Other packaged and ready for a lustfaced gaze-and-devour. (Or it is visible but ridiculous, laugh track-able: Jessie Spano reminding Slater yet again that she’s not a piece of meat.)

Exclusive: ARTPOP Details Uncovered

April 1, 2013 in News by Gagaism.org

After several months of desperately waiting for news on Lady Gaga’s upcoming album, ARTPOP, little monsters everyone can finally rejoice. We have spoken with a member of the HAUS and are proud to be the first to announce the details of ARTPOP!

artpop

“I am an Art Popist. I assign Art to things that are popular. I place new meaning on that which already exists.” – Lady Gaga

Contrary to earlier reports, ARTPOP is not an album full of new material. Rather, Gaga is breaking the creative mold by creating a album full of remixes, extended versions, and behind-the-scenes “making-of” documentaries of all her most famous works along with previously unreleased material. Here are a few examples of what will be found on ARTPOP:

-A unique mashup/rock-inspired remix of Bad Romance and Poker Face, tentatively titled “Judas.”

-The Edge of Glory video we always wanted but never got. The video features more footage of Gaga dancing on the fire escape. In order to fill the extra footage with music, Gaga has enlisted Katy Perry to sing an additional verse from the perspective of Yüyi over the sound of the saxophone solo from Last Friday Night.

-Nocturnal Anniversary: An updated remix of the Marry the Night video. It will answer lingering questions from the original Marry the Night video such as, “When will the song start?” and, “What exactly is going on anyway?”

-Skype: Lady Gaga’s smash hit Telephone, updated for 2013. The song is exactly the same, except the line “stop telephoning me” has been replaced with, “stop Skype chatting with me.”

-Disco Shtick: A teaser for Lady Gaga’s upcoming comedy tour with Bette Midler.

-TEA: A video montage of Gaga’s most prized teacups, set to a remixed version of the song Born This Way featuring sampled vocals from Madonna in which she says “reductive” and sips tea. The song ends with Gaga pointing out that Express Yourself sounds very similar to the 1970s hit Respect Yourself before spilling hot tea on Madonna.

-The previously unreleased video to Dance in the Dark! Directed by Laurieann Gibson, it is the first music video ever to be shot entirely in the dark! The video (and accompanying single release) was shelved and replaced with Alejandro after test audiences complained that they couldn’t see anything in the video but a pitch-black screen.

New music, including songs such as Sex Dreams and G.U.Y. (Guy Under You) were originally set to be included with ARTPOP, but have been postponed until her next album.

ARTPOP is set for release April 1, 2014.

Exclusive Interview: Miles Viljanen Talks ARTPOP, Meeting Lady Gaga

March 1, 2013 in Featured, News, Special Features by Scott Finley

Gagaism Heads to the Born This Way Ball Part Two: Miles Viljanen on Meeting Lady Gaga and ARTPOP.

On January 20, Lady Gaga took to the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as part of her juggernaut Born This Way Ball tour. Among those in attendance was Miles Viljanen from Pasadena. Dancing with his friends in the Monster Pit, Miles and his friends got the surprise of a lifetime when Lady Gaga herself picked them out from the crowd to join her on stage and visit her after the show, where they would discuss a variety of topics, including ARTPOP, Gaga’s much-anticipated third LP set for release later this year. This is Miles’ story.

Scott Finley: So, Gaga picked you out of the crowd during Marry the Night, right? Walk us through that experience. What was it like being on stage with her?

Miles Viljanen: Gaga did pick us out of the crowd during Marry the Night. We had seen the Seattle show beforehand and she picked people from the barricade at center stage. Seeing as how we were hanging out in the very back, we all assumed that she was going to pick from the front again. As she slowly made her way around the catwalk, she got to the very end of it and continued singing towards the rest of Staples Center. All of a sudden she turns around and I’m sure we all had these ridiculous cheeky grins on our faces. I felt like she had looked at us several times throughout the night, but this one seemed a little longer than usual. There was probably a millisecond between where I thought, “Oh my God. Is she going to pick us?” and when she said, “Give me these five kids on stage.” All of our eyes quadrupled in size and I remember this huge wall of sound behind us followed by a wall of people pushing us against the barricade.

Lady Gaga Started Walking Right After Hip Surgery, May Possess Magic Powers

February 20, 2013 in Featured, News by Scott Finley

According to Joe Germanotta, Lady Gaga’s father, Gaga is out of surgery and has already taken her first steps!!

Loops taken her first steps. Looked like the moon walk to me
@germanottajoe

Gaga’s  ability to walk immediately after hip surgery is rather astounding. In fact, it has prompted some little monsters to jokingly say that Gaga must have magic powers.

Wait a minute. Sleeping in a giant bottle for the FAME perfume launch, mentioning that ARTPOP is about “possibilities,” magic powers…it could only mean one thing!

I dream of Gaga!

I dream of Gaga!

I’m onto you, Gaga!

BUSTED!

BUSTED!

Ah hah!

Seriously. How how does she do it? Girl’s got amazing tenacity. I’m glad everything went smoothly, but take it easy, Gaga!!

Lady Gaga Cancels Tour Due To Hip Injury: A Closer Look

February 14, 2013 in Featured, News by Gagaism.org

gagaregal

We are sad to report that Lady Gaga has been forced to cancel the remainder of her Born This Way Ball tour due to a hip injury known as a labral tear. Gaga’s doctors have determined that her injury is serious enough to warrant surgery. According to our research, a procedure known as hip arthroscopy is likely to be performed. (Note: We are not doctors. The information below is based on simple online research and is not meant to replace the expertise of trained medical professionals.)

Basic recovery from hip arthroscopy generally takes six to twelve weeks and full recovery– in which normal activity can be resumed without restriction–often takes four to six months. However, these are just averages; recovery time can vary quite a bit from patient to patient depending on a variety of factors such as the severity of the tear. It is highly unlikely that Gaga will be able to perform the type of strenuous dance routines that characterize her shows for quite some time, at least a few months realistically.

Sadly, there is a possibility that she will never again be able to dance quite like she used to, though full recovery is possible in many cases and we should remain hopeful. Frankly, we have neither the medical expertise nor the necessary information about her particular case to make an educated guess on this matter. However, we all know Gaga is one of the most strong-willed and determined people on the planet and these qualities will undoubtedly come in handy over the next several months. Furthermore, she has the love and support of her loved ones and her millions of little monsters to encourage and comfort her on her path to recovery.

If you would like to send Gaga a “get well soon” message, the folks at GagaDaily are putting a “Get Well Gaga” fan book. Click here for more information. If you would like to leave a simple online message instead, please click here. (Note: you must be registered with GagaDaily to participate in the second option. However, registration is quick and free.)

Let us all wish Mother Monster a quick and painless recovery.

(For those wondering, part two of our three-part feature on the Born This Way Ball has been canceled, as a guide to the Ball would no longer be of use to our readers. However, the final portion of the feature—the analysis—is still on its way.)

Born This Way Ball Review – Part One of Gagaism’s Born This Way Ball Three-Part Feature

February 4, 2013 in Featured, Opinion/Analysis, Special Features by Scott Finley

Gagaism Heads to the Born This Way Ball Part One: The Born This Way Ball Review

(Note: Our Born This Way Ball review is based off of two separate visits to the Born This Way Ball made by Scott Finley, the first being at Twickenham Stadium in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2012 and the second being at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 20, 2013.)

The show begins just as dramatically as you would expect from Gaga, as the Lady is taken for a ride across the stage atop a shockingly convincing faux unicorn (some have called it “mechanical” but it is actually human-powered), escorted by armed guards carrying flags that read “G.O.A.T.” for “Government-Owned Territory in Space.” Dressed like a sexy vixen version of the Xenomorph from Alien, Gaga belts out a few lines to Highway Unicorn before riding off the stage. For an opening number, it’s oddly short, but it works, serving as a sort of prelude to the rest of the show.

Seconds after exiting the stage, a floating disembodied head resembling Mother Monster in her Born This Way video referred to as Mother G.O.A.T. informs the audience that Lady Gaga is a “space renegade” who has escaped custody and must be killed before she fulfills her mission to birth a new race. (From this point on, Mother G.O.A.T serves as a sort of narrator, explaining to us in rather cryptic terms the sublimely bizarre plot unfolding before us.) After Mother G.O.A.T.’s introduction, Gaga returns in her Alien-inspired costume and descends a long staircase while writhing around suggestively to Government Hooker. By the time the song has ended, Gaga has simulated oral sex with a guard before stealing his gun and using it against him (the gun has been replace by a metal bar for the North American version, presumably in response to the Newtown tragedy), welcomed us all to the Born This Way Ball, and exited the stage for the first of many, many costume changes.

From here on out the show just gets weirder and weirder in ways you can’t imagine. From giving birth to herself, to riding around on stage as a motorcycle (similar to her notorious Born This Way album cover), to processing her dancers and herself through giant meat grinders, Gaga hits us hard with “WTF” moments throughout the entire show. It’s absolutely bonkers–and utterly fantastic. Aesthetically, the Born This Way ball is in a class of its own. Both stark and warm, foreboding and inspiring, there is a constant fusion of seemingly incompatible characteristics that is utterly fascinating. The oppressive feel of the bleak and monolithic set juxtaposed against Gaga’s bubbly message of love, rebellion, and freedom of expression is particularly brilliant, as it is a perfect representation of Born This Way’s unique blend of cold, mechanical dance beats with heartfelt crooning.

However, rather impressively, Gaga never lets the show’s aesthetics upstage her. Every single moment Gaga spends on stage is one is which she commands attention like few artists can, using not only her incredible star power, but also her jaw-dropping vocals as well as some truly spectacular and eerily precise dance moves. As fantastic as the Monster Ball was, it was more a demonstration of Gaga’s stage presence and creative genius than anything. Now that those aspects of her talent have been thoroughly established, Gaga has wisely decided to use the Born This Way Ball to push her singing and dancing to the next level, with stunning results. During Scheiße, Gaga and her troupe perform a dance routine to rival Janet Jackson. (Incidentally, this particular number is reminiscent of Janet’s Rhythm Nation in all the right ways.) While singing The Edge of Glory a cappella, Gaga proves that she has one of the very best voices among her contemporaries. Virtually every song showcases her voice and/or dancing ability beautifully, with the only major exception being her oddly underwhelming performance of Electric Chapel, in which Gaga plays the guitar and sings in an odd tone that quite honestly sounds rather mediocre compared to the fantastic vocals she lays down on the album version. One not-quite-amazing routine aside, there is no shortage of talent demonstrated at the Ball.

That said, the most impressive among these talents is Gaga’s unmatched connection with her fans. Never has an artist managed to make it so big and yet maintain such an intimate, powerful, and ever-loving connection with their fan base. When Gaga speaks to the audience, telling concert-goers to dream big and love themselves, you can tell she means it, and so can everyone else in attendance. Any other artist laying on the affection so thick would risk coming across as insincere, but seeing Gaga in person and watching her interact with her fans proves beyond any doubt that her love is genuine. Even with her powerhouse vocals, once-in-a-generation showmanship, and mind-boggling creativity, Gaga’s ability to be a pop idol, a mother figure, and a friend to millions of people simultaneously is her greatest gift. This is what makes Gaga a truly revolutionary artist, and it has never been so apparent as it is at the Born This Way Ball.

A Quick Update on Gagaism

January 1, 2013 in News by Gagaism.org

Gagaism.org would like to apologize for the delay on the Born This Way Ball review and the general inactivity of the site over the last few months. Rest assured, a review is still coming, and it will also compare Born This Way Ball 1.0 with the updated North American version set to debut very soon.

As for other updates to the site, we decided to save them for ARTPOP. We will be shaking things up here at Gagaism and injecting new life into the site in the relatively near future, but we’re waiting for the right time to do so. In the meantime, updates will be somewhat scarce. We appreciate your patience. ARTPOP. GAGAISM. 2013. Get ready!

Gagaism Heads To The Born This Way Ball

September 6, 2012 in News by Scott Finley

UPDATE: I apologize for the major delay. Personal issues cropped up that needed my undivided attention. I did in fact attend the BTW Ball on September 9th, 2012, and it was great! I will also be attending the updated North American version of the show very soon. A review of both will follow.  #monsterlove

Hey monsters, it’s Scott. I am pleased to announce that I will be attending the Born This Way Ball at Twickenham Stadium in London this Sunday! I haven’t seen Gaga live since the Grammy Nominations Concert, which was nearly a year ago, so it’s about time I see her again. When I return, I will be writing a thorough and honest review of the show for Gagaism.org. My goal is to write a slightly different kind of review than the ones you’ve been reading since the tour began, written from the perspective of someone who is a little monster just like you.

As I will be traveling this week, the site will be fairly inactive, but I promise we will have lots more content for you soon. (September is going to be an intense month for monsters.) I will see you all next week, unless you’re also going to the concert on Sunday, in which case I will see you at the Born This Way Ball!
